SEO cares about your file names

AiroServer's Blog

In our earlier posts, we said that in order to have a website, the first things that you need are a domain and a web hosting service to host your website’s files. We also said that you can manage our website’s files using a hosting control panel. After setting up your website it’s time to show it to the world in the best way possible. Here is when SEO can help you. We already discussed how important SEO is but in this post we are going to explain that even your filenames are important for SEO!

Every web page has a file in the control panel. These files include the codes of that web page. Choosing those files’ names can help you have a better SEO score. At the time of creating your web pages, make sure to name their files according to what exactly that page is showing users.

SEO cares about website filenames
Things to consider at the time of choosing a website’s filenames:
  • Filenames should be short and descriptive
  • The keywords that you use in the filename is better to be the same one you use in the page title
  • Don’t use generic names like htm or job.htm. Choose the ones that are more specific about your content and services. For example, Computer-repairing.htm is a much better option.
  • Don’t use more than 4 words
  • Separate the words with hyphens NOT underscore. Here is why:

When you write a filename like this: example-filename, google reads it like this: example filename which is perfect. However, if you write it like this: example_filename, this is how Google reads it: examplefilename which is awful for SEO.

  • Your filename must match the words and content that are in that page.
  • And last but not least, make sure to use at least two keywords.
File Formats:

We should know that the filename extensions like .htm, .html and etc aren’t practical for users and are more important for web servers. Some say that it’s better to save files without extensions but this might not work in some cases.

Some additional things to consider in for SEO:
  • Choose your URL as shortest as possible.
  • It’s better for each file to be less than 101k in size. This is because Google ignores files that are bigger than that.
