By reading our earlier post about IP, now we know that IP is like a Zip code and every device that is connected to a network (like the Internet) gets a unique IP and that’s how devices and routers can communicate with each other on networks. Whenever you want to send a package to another device on a network, you need your destination’s IP. Now you may ask: How should we know which IP belongs to whom?

IP Regions

Obviously, we are not able to memorize all IPs in the whole word. That’s why ICANN was created. ICAAN is the abbreviation of “Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers”. This Corporation is in charge of handling all IPs and their related information. Handling this large number of IPs isn’t easy at all. Therefore, ICANN divided the world to 5 Regions to make it easier. Each Region is responsible for the administration of Internet addresses and domains for a certain area. Here are those 5 Regions and the areas that they are responsible for:

1. AFRINIC (African Network Information Centre): Africa
2. APNIC (the Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre): Asia Pacific
3. ARIN (American Registry for Internet Numbers): North America, including Canada, the United States and portions of the Caribbean.
4. LACNIC: Latin American and the Caribbean
5. RIPE NCC: Europe, Middle East, parts of Africa and West Asia.

What is my IP?

By now you know that your IP is the logical address of your computer. This means that according to those Regions, your IP can show which Region you are at. But should we all memorize our IP? the answer is no. You don’t need to always know your IP but when you do, It’s very easy to find it. Whenever you need your IP, just simply type in “what’s my IP” on Google. The number that is shown there, is your computer’s IP.
